In Chapter 10, Paul reverts back to the conversation of his reputation and the falsehoods that have been spread about him in the Corinthian church.  In a pastoral, firm, and Christ-like way, Paul will lay out for the Corinthians why he is often meek and gentle, but sometimes bold, and will ultimately put forth a goal for the church to employ Christ-like spiritual warfare on lies, dissension, and wolves in the church, for the glory of Christ and the health of the local church!

  1. Pauls appeals are in the spirit of Christs meekness and gentleness (10:1-2)
    1. Though Christ was sometimes very gentle and sometimes not, it was not a contradiction or hypocrisy on his part.
    2. Christs rebuke of the adulterous woman vs. the Pharisees
    3. There is a time for boldness, gentleness, and everything in between
  2. Spiritual Warfare uses the Christ-exalting spiritual weapons (10:3-4)
    1. Pauls issue isnt with physical weapons, but with fleshly weapons
    2. Ephesians 6 gives us a picture of our spiritual weapons (from Matthew Henry)
      1. Instead of the belt of truth, they fought with manipulation.
      2. Instead of the breastplate of righteousness, they fought with the image of success.
      3. Instead of the shoes of the gospel, they fought with smooth words.
      4. Instead of the shield of faith, they fought with the perception of power.
      5. Instead of the helmet of salvation, they fought with lording over authority.
      6. Instead of the sword of the Spirit, they fought with human schemes and programs.
  3. Conflict and arguments in the church should always have a positive spiritual purpose (10:5-6)
    1. They should aim at lies and dangers, not people
    2. They should champion truth
    3. They should hold up Christ as the standard
    4. Ultimately, the honor of Christ and the health of the Church are the purpose and goal!
