A New World for a Renewed People (Acts 2:2-14)

The story of Pentecost is one that we know well! But oftentimes we get bogged down in arguments about tongues, the spiritual gifts, and so much more that we miss the primary goal of God's actions in this passage. He is creating a new world, with a renewed people, who will turn everything upside down through the power of God given to them through the Holy Spirit!

  1. Pentecost Clarifies Where to Find God (2:2-3)

    1. The details of 2-4 echo stories of the presence of God!

      1. “Rushing wind filled the house” like the temple.

      2. Wind and Spirit are the same word, and are associated with creation and life (Genesis 1, Ez. 37)

      3. “Fire” that doesn’t consume shows up in the burning bush and Mount Sinai!

    2. This is a statement from God: These are my people, and they are my Temple.

  2. Pentecost Clarifies Who are God’s People (2:4-12)

    1. God chooses this time purposefully: His people are from every nation, fulfilling Isaiah 49:6.

    2. God shows how he will ultimately accomplish this: The Holy Spirit’s power, exemplified in miraculously speaking in foreign tongues.

    3. Pentecost leaves no doubt that God is fulfilling Isaiah 49:6.

    4. This is ultimately the undoing of the Babel curse!

  3. Pentecost Paints a Picture of a New World

    1. God' s presence will be with and in the people, with a new law written on their hearts.

    2. God’s people will be from every tribe and tongue and nation.

    3. The curse is being undone, as God’s people faithfully follow His commission.

    4. Some will make excuses, but the power of God will move as His people respond faithfully.
